Faculty of Agribusiness and Natural Resource Science

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) establishes an institute focused on modern agricultural education, called the Faculty of Agribusiness and Natural Resource Sciences (FANRES). This new faculty operates as an independent entity, generating its own financial resources, and aims to enhance agriculture education with a foundation in scientific, technological, and entrepreneurial principles. FANRES addresses key agricultural sectors, including crop production, livestock production, agricultural economics/agribusiness, and agricultural engineering, aligning with IUIU's mission and core values.

The faculty's primary goals include training students at various degree levels (Diploma, Bachelor of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy) and conducting research focused on sustainable biological development, environmental conservation, and biodiversity. Additionally, it seeks to raise community awareness about agricultural production and the sustainable use of natural resources.
FANRES operates on a robust platform built on experience, integrity, collaborative problem-solving, and contextual understanding. The initiative leverages IUIU's extensive experience in community service and its collaboration with national, regional, and international stakeholders. The IUIU University Council approved the concept of FANRES in its meeting on June 10, 2022.

The establishment of FANRES presents a significant opportunity for agriculture in Africa, particularly in Uganda, where agriculture contributes 23.7% of GDP, 31% of export earnings, and provides employment to 70% of the population. The faculty's training programs are designed to combat poverty, hunger, and address climate change, while promoting sustainable economic development.

FANRES's modern agricultural studies emphasize Islamic perspectives, drawing knowledge from the Quran. The curriculum includes value addition, climate-smart agriculture, organic production, agricultural innovations, entrepreneurship, agribusiness, sustainable natural resource and environmental management, biodiversity conservation, community development, and Halal production standards. To achieve its objectives, FANRES aims to establish collaborative partnerships with institutions and stakeholders at national, regional, and international levels.
