Admission of Applicants With International Qualifications
Applicants who study through educational systems quite different from that of Uganda (7.4.2. ≥3 system) most especially international students are not directly admitted at IUIU until their academic documents are equated or standardized to Ugandan level of education by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and/or Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE). It is the responsibility of the applicant to submit equated academic documents.
Some of the applicants apply with qualifications from the following countries;
KENYA
Students who go through a Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) ie the 8.4.4 system, and apply to join IUIU, for a degree course, must first study a one-year certificate in Remedial Studies Programme (RSP). This is because these students go through twelve years of formal primary and secondary school education without a High School Certificate (HSC) or Advanced level (‘A’ level.
Such students should have obtained a minimum Mean Grade of C+ to qualify for the IUIU Remedial Studies Programme.
SUDAN, BURUNDI, SOMALIA AND DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC)
Students from the above-mentioned countries go through Primary, Secondary and High School levels and then a summative evaluation of the three stages is made at the end. The assessment is done in percentages and/or average point systems say 51% or average 2.0. Applicants from these countries MUST go through the IUIU Remedial Studies Programme before they are admitted into mainstream degree courses. The minimum qualification for such applicants to qualify for RSP is 50%.
REMEDIAL SUBJECT COMBINATIONS
Remedial Studies are taught in two faculties; Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The former teaches science subjects while the latter teaches arts, humanities and social science subjects. Students admitted to the Remedial Studies Programme shall take a three-subject combination in addition to three compulsory papers ie Advanced English, Introductory Arabic and Introduction to Islam.
A student who chooses to offer Arabic as part of his/her subject combination shall be exempted from introductory Arabic and a student who chooses Islam as part of his/her subject combination shall be exempted from Introduction to Islam.
A student shall not be registered until he/she chooses the approved combination tailored to an appropriate undergraduate degree course after successful completion of RSP. The Dean of faculty shall ensure that students are guided accordingly. The student shall choose the subjects he/she passed well at an advanced level or the equivalent.
The chosen three core subjects shall be considered Essential, Relevant and Desirable respectively while the compulsory papers shall be considered as others. The student shall be asked to choose among the three-subject combination, an essential principal subject which he/she will be required to pass with a minimum of B+ before he/she is registered for a preferred mainstream undergraduate degree course after the remedial programme. For example, if a student wants to do a Bachelor of Statistics, such student shall choose mathematics as essential among other subjects which he/she must pass with a minimum of B+ aggregate. Economics becomes an essential subject for BBS and Literature in English for LLB and BSc. Mass Communication, Biology for BFSN etc etc.
It should be noted that since RSP is equated to an ‘A’ level, a student who failed mathematics at an ‘O’ level or the equivalent shall not be allowed to offer an undergraduate degree course that requires it at an ‘O’ level or the equivalent even when he/she passed the essential subject at RSP. For example, if a student got an “E” in mathematics at 8.4.4
n system of education which is equivalent to “F9” in the Ugandan system, such a student shall not be allowed to do say BBS or BIT even if he/she passed economics with an ‘A’ aggregate. However, a faculty may consider his/her application if he/she did it and passed it at RSP.
The combinations shall be circulated on faculty notice boards for students to choose the subjects preferred in consideration of the student’s undergraduate degree programme he/she wishes to apply for after completing the remedial course.
The subject pool for science combinations shall be; Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics while that of Arts & Social Sciences shall be Geography, Economics, History, and Literature in English, Kiswahili, Arabic language and Islam.

RWANDA
According to the Rwanda National Examinations Council, for a student to qualify for an Advanced level certificate, he/she must have obtained at least 3 Principal passes at grades E, E, Eie 3 Points or equivalent, eg E and D or a C. However, the minimum for joining Rwandese Higher Education Institutions is 19 points. This does not necessarily mean that 19 points obtained at the ‘A’ level can qualify an applicant to do any preferred course. Different academic programmes have different minimum points. The minimum points for a Rwandese applicant to join IUIU for a degree course is therefore 19 points as it is considered in Rwanda for Rwandese applicants.
The explanation above implies that IUIU can admit Rwandese applicants into degree programmes directly without subjecting them to an RSP as long as they meet the minimum requirements for specific courses.

OTHER COUNTRIES
Holders of qualifications from other countries not mentioned above are considered on one basis. The admissions of such students must be appropriate and by specifications made by the National Council for Higher Education.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
- Language of Instruction
The language of Instruction is English, except at the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language (FISAL), where the Language of instruction is Arabic. Candidates from countries where the language of Instruction is not English are required to supply evidence of proficiency in English or take a mandatory course in English Proficiency before the commencement of the programme
- Visa requirements
International students whose countries are not exempted from having a visa to enter Uganda must visit the Ministry of Internal Affairs and apply for a Visa
- Student Permits
International students need to have valid student permits once in the country. If the VISA expires before completion of the programme, the students should contact the coordinator of International Affairs to process the students’ pass. Students’ permits will be extended for only fully registered students. International students from outside the East African Community will be required to pay USD 100 per year as an Immigration Pass fee. This fee may be subject to change by the Immigration Department, Ministry of Internal Affairs without notice. Note that no international student shall be registered without submitting the requirements of a student’s pass.
Students will be expected to meet the Visa expenses including administrative costs
The University shall not be responsible when the request for the Student Pass is rejected by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
