Assoc. Prof. Matovu Highlights Successful PhD Dissertation Defense at IUIU

Islamic University in Uganda held a Doctoral Research Conference on Sunday the 18th of June 2023 at the Main Campus in Mbale.
The event was the first of its kind at IUIU and was held under the Theme; "Multidisciplinary Research for Sustainable Development: Towards a Food-secure, Healthy, Well-educated and Environmentally Conscious Community'' organized by the Directorate of Research, Publications & Innovation, and Center for Postgraduate Studies .
In his opening remarks, the Rector of IUIU Prof Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda commended the Directorate of Research, Publications & Innovation and the Center for Postgraduate Studies for organizing the event.
Prof Ismail stressed the importance of the multi-disciplinary approach and thinking globally, as institutions try to solve challenges and questioned the approach of solving challenges in solo mode instead of the multi-disciplinary mode which will require a new way of thinking.
The Rector also highlighted the association of different departments in research due to interconnection which will encourage the sharing of ideas to prepare a new cadre of graduates that will be able to face the multi-faceted world.
The Vice Rector in charge of finance and administration at IUIU, Prof. Kaziba Mpaata emphasized the concept of designing, developing, and delivering concepts in research. Prof Abdul also stressed the value of benchmarking and problem-focused interdisciplinary research directed to specific real-world problems.
The Academic Registrar of IUIU Dr. Halima Wakabi Akbar commended the directorate for organising the event. Dr. Halima said the conference offered a platform for an intellectual debate of ideas where members will articulate ideas and researchers go back and reflect.
In his closing remarks, the Vice Rector in charge of academics Dr. Jamil Serwanga added his voice to thank the organizers of the event.
Dr Jamil cited the need for the publication of research by students at IUIU which will help to increase the visibility of the institution and encouraged researchers to incorporate the values of Islam in their research through integrity, excellence, diversity, creativity, and faith.
He also emphasized the need to ensure quality assurance through regulatory bodies, professional bodies, the private sector, and civil societies while carrying out research.
Dr Jamil added that Ph.D. candidates should be able to demonstrate their work upon completion of the program.
The Director Research and Publications Dr Maimuna Nimulola Aminah thanked PhD candidates who had prepared papers and urged others to prepare themselves for presentations at the next conference.
