IUIU Hosts a COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar Program

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) is hosting a 4-Days Workshop on “Skills-based Training and Multidisciplinary Research in the Age of Computing and AI”, under the COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar Program. This is a flagship program of COMSTECH aimed at facilitating knowledge and skills transfer, as well as experience sharing between some of the Distinguished Scholars of various knowledge domains, and the Research & Academic communities within the OIC Member States, to which Uganda is a member. The Distinguished Scholar at this Workshop is, Professor Dr Zahid Halim, Professor and Dean Faculty of Computer Sciences and Engineering, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), Pakistan. GIKI is one of the top Computing Universities in Pakistan.

The Workshop jointly organised and facilitated by IUIU and COMSTECH is taking place physically at IUIU Kampala Campus, from 15th to 18th January 2024, with online participation from over 19 Countries. The 40 Physical Participants are senior academic and administrative staff from the host institution, IUIU, and four other Ugandan Universities, including; Kampala International University (KIU), Kampala University (KU), Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSaT), and Islamic Call University College (ICIU).

The four days Workshop will be covering four key items: - (i) The Biosignal Processing Workflow for Affecting Computing, (ii) The General  Framework and Opportunities for Conducting Multidisciplinary Research in this Age of Computing and AI, (iii) Experience sharing on effective Skill-based Approaches for Delivery of Computer Science and Information Technology Curricular, (iv) Exploring the Research and Innovation Opportunities for Collaboration and Partnership among the participating Universities.

The Workshop was officially opened on 15th January 2024, by the Rector of IUIU, Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, represented by the Vice-Rector, Academic Affairs - Dr Jamil Serwanga. The Rector thanked COMSTECH for availing IUIU of this great opportunity to host such a useful and resourceful workshop. The Coordinator-General of COMSTECH, Professor Dr Iqbal M. Choudary, also delivered his recorded message in which he reiterated COMSTECH’s commitment to building the Capacity of Human Resources within the OIC as far as Science Technology, and Innovation (STI) is concerned. It should be recalled that IUIU is currently COMSTECH’s designated STI Hub for Africa, and therefore this workshop aligns well with its broad ambitions and efforts towards STI.

The Workshop is being coordinated by Mr Haseeb Ahmed from COMSTECH, Islamabad, and Dr Umar Yahya from IUIU, Uganda, assisted by; Mr Dragule Swaib (IUIU-COMSTECH Coordinator) and Dr Adam A. Alli (The Head of Department – Computer Science, IUIU).
