Assoc. Prof. Matovu Highlights Successful PhD Dissertation Defense at IUIU

Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) plans to increase its research funding in the coming years. This decision was made during a meeting on September 6, 2023, at the IUIU Main Campus, with Prof. A.B.K. Kasozi, Chair of the University Council's Academic Affairs Committee. Attendees included Rector Prof Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, Vice Rector in charge of finance Prof Abdul Kaziba Mpaata, Directors, heads of departments, deans, and lecturers . The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the importance of research in universities and explore strategies to enhance publication.
During the meeting, Prof. A.B.K emphasized that universities are not solely defined by their buildings but have the primary responsibility of generating and preserving knowledge. He stated, "The main role of universities is to disseminate knowledge, not just produce graduates."
Assoc Prof. Madinah Nabukeera, the Director of IUIU Females' Campus, also emphasized the significance of funding research for publication, citing examples from Malaysian universities where lecturers receive annual funds to conduct research in their respective fields.
In response, Prof. Ismail expressed appreciation to Prof. Kasozi for visiting IUIU and affirmed the administration's commitment to providing essential funding for research, recognizing its importance in higher education.
Prof Kasozi later toured the campus and visited the new library, which is almost completed. He also commended The Rector and university administration for successfully starting the construction of the faculty of engineering.
A.B.K. Kasozi is currently Research Associate, Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR). He is the founding Executive Director of Uganda's National Council for Higher Education, which he steered for ten years, from 2002 to 2013. He has taught at Makerere, the University of Khartoum and in North America.
He was formerly Vice Rector (Deputy Head) and Professor of History at the Islamic University in Uganda (1995-2002). He is the author of many publications.
