IUIU Students EC Nominates Guild candidates

The students' electoral commission, Islamic university in Uganda has successfully carried out guild nominations at the main campus in Mbale.

The exercise was carried out yesterday Wednesday 29th of march 2023 at the management shade as students displayed support for their desired candidates in the positions of guild president, lady vice, speaker, sports minister, and deputy sports minister.

Seven candidates were nominated for the guild president position, including Yusuf Sharif, Sembuya Shafi, Oguti Nassir, Abdul Malik Bbosa, Wakabi Shafic, Musoke Erias, and Muhamad Uthman.

Two candidates were nominated for the vice lady, speakership, and sports minister and they include Nakyanzi Hairat with Mwajuma Taufic and Buga Ismail with Zaake Birabe while Muliro Ismail will be contesting against Sadat Ssentamu respectively. 

Bwene Shakira was the only candidate nominated for deputy sports minister during the exercise.

According to the Islamic university in Uganda students’ union constitution, among other qualities, one must exhibit the following to be eligible for nomination in an electoral position in the students’ guild. One must have completed a full academic year at the campus, not have been convicted of any criminal offence in the courts of law, and present high academic excellence.

The candidates will appear before the Shura subcommittee on Monday 3rd April 2023 for an interview after which the final declaration of the successful candidates will be made on Thursday 6th April 2023.

While announcing the nominated candidates, the electoral commission chairperson Watenga Siragi said those who are dissatisfied are free to petition the outcome of the nomination.

The deputy coordinator of IUIU Mr Nasib Yusuf said the exercise is advancing smoothly and called upon students to maintain peace and calm during the campaigns and elections day.

Campaigns are expected to kick off on the 6th of April 2023 while the presidential debate will be held on the 11th of April 2023 and will be aired live on Salaam Television.

Voting will be carried out online on 15th April 2023 through the university E-voting system accessible by all registered students with a smartphone or any device connected to the internet.
