  • 21st October, 2021 12:00am
The Higher Education Students’ Financing Board (HESFB) has launched a regional application support center at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), to ease the application, short-listing and follow up processes of the loan scheme by the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the launch on Wednesday 23 October 2021, Mr. Bosa Kizito, the Director of Operation at HESFB said they have secured Shillings 6 billion to support over 1500 students under the study loan scheme in the 2021/2022 academic year.
“We have secured shillings 6 billion to support over 1500 students under the study loan scheme in the 2021/2022 academic year”. According to Mr. Bosa, the board will support only finalist students in second, third and fourth years for those doing two, three, and four year courses respectively.
The center, which becomes the board’s 16th to be established, targets students from Eastern Region and will facilitate the application process for students’ loans. The other centers are in Kyambogo, Makerere and Ndejje (Kampala Campus) Universities, which cater for the Kampala metropolitan area, as well as Muni University in West Nile, Gulu University in Acholi sub region and Busitema for Bukedi region.
Mr. Kizito said that HESFB will prioritise supporting students studying sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. He remarked that the application centers were established to bring them closer to the students who need to continue with their education but cannot afford to pay university fees.
Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, the Rector of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), said that IUIU will support students to ensure that they are financed under the scheme. He thanked the government and welcomed the idea of regionalising the application centers, affirming that it will enable students to access the scheme with ease.
“We thank the government and the board for decentralizing such so that it can keep helping people in the region, so those who want to take it we as IUIU shall support it.”
